For the fashion lovers serving expensive looks on a budget

8:18 PM, when elevating your wardrobe doesn’t need a luxury price tag
Looking expensive doesn’t have to mean spending a lot. In this guide, you’ll learn practical ways to look polished and put-together without over-spending.
Once I leaned into this, my outfits went from meh to a solid ten. I started looking more effortlessly chic, even in the most basic pieces. You don’t need a whole new wardrobe or designer labels to get that effect. It really just comes down to being more intentional with how you put things together, not how much you spend. If you’ve been wanting to elevate your style without breaking the bank, this is a good place to start.
So what does looking expensive on a budget actually look like in practice?
1. Hair Is Everything
Whenever I think about hair, I remember the funny scene in Fleabag, where she says “hair is everything”. And honestly, I couldn’t agree more. It may seem like a small detail, but hair really sets the tone for how polished you look.
Well-maintained hair signals elegance and instantly makes even the simplest outfits look intentional. Neglected hair on the other hand may give the impression of a lack of self-care and can take away from an otherwise well-styled outfit.
It doesn’t matter whether you go short or long, curly or straight; what matters is that your hair looks neat and cared for when you step out. Simple habits like washing your hair, trimming your split ends, and choosing styles that suit your face shape can really make a difference in how polished and expensive you look.

2. Fit Is Chic
I’ve found that an outfit only really clears the quiet luxury on a budget check when the fit works for your silhouette. You can go a bit oversized or more fitted, but it has to feel balanced.
Well-fitted clothing makes you look expensive because it creates clean lines and a more intentional shape. When pieces are too tight or too loose in the wrong places, it can make even the most chic outfit idea look off. The key is to balance something oversized with a piece more structured or fitted to maintain a polished look.
Think an oversized shirt tucked into tailored trousers and finished with a belt and slingback heels. You could also pair wide-leg trousers with a fitted top. That way, it feels intentional. Moreover, adding small adjustments like tucking, cinching or tailoring can make a significant difference in your overall look.

3. Shapewear Makes All the Difference
Sometimes the difference between an okay outfit and an elevated one is how it sits on your body. The way your clothes fall and fit can make or break your look.
A good shapewear can create a smooth base so your clothes fit cleaner and look more polished overall. This is especially helpful when going for fitted or structured outfits, where lines and silhouettes are more noticeable.
This isn’t to mean changing your body (I’m all about body positivity), but rather as a way to enhance the way your clothes fit. The perfect shapewear should feel comfortable and not constrictive.
For example, wearing a strapless shapewear under a silk dress can make the fabric lay better and give a more refined finish.

4. The Power of quality Fabric
I’d like to think that we all wear similar types of clothing, but what often sets outfits apart is the quality of the fabric. High quality material is what makes an outfit look expensive compared to a similar low quality piece.
Pieces made from good quality fabric tend to drape better and hold shape, which naturally gives off a more elevated appearance. While clothes made from very thin material tend to lose shape making the overall outfit less refined.
You don’t need to purge your entire wardrobe and buy expensive pieces all at once, but you could invest in one quality staple piece every month or two that can be worn in multiple ways. Fabrics like cotton, linen, and silk can make your outfit look expensive.

5. Neutrals
One thing I know about neutral pieces is that they are your shortcut to looking expensive. Nothings fits the “effortlessly stylish without trying” essence quite like neutral outfits.
Neutral colours work so well because they create a cohesive look. From cool tones like black, crisp white, and grey to warm tones like cream, beige and brown, neutral shades blend effortlessly to make an outfit look intentional.
I talked a bit more about how I make my neutral outfits feel more elevated in my previous post.

6. Accessories Are The Statement
Adding on accessories to an already thought-out outfit is the icing on the cake. Think of it as the finishing touch that enhances the look by pulling everything together.
You could go minimal or one bold statement piece depending on the outfit. Gold mini hoops, a slim belt, a silk scarf, a structured bag, a cap, watches or bracelets… you’re honestly spoiled for choice.
The important thing is that it needs to feel intentional rather than a random throw-on. A well-chosen accessory can upgrade a simple outfit while too many can take away from the overall look.

7. A Little Makeup Goes a Long Way
For me, the best kind of makeup is the one that flatters your features. It might take some trial and error with different techniques and brands, but it’s worth it.
A soft, and well-balanced makeup can you appear more polished; think soft glam makeup. Even something as simple as groomed brows, mascara and lip gloss can elevate your appearance.
Skincare is where the glow is at, and good hygiene is non-negotiable for your overall appearance. It is, after all, the foundation of looking and feeling polished.

8. The Shoes Are the Focal Point
Your choice of shoes can literally make or break your outfit. You could pick out the best pieces but if the shoes miss the mark, so does the outfit.
I’ve found that cleaner, more structured styles tend to elevate your look. Think pointed-toe boots, sleek heels, or even minimal sandals. They don’t have to be expensive, just well-kept and intentional.
Shoes naturally draw attention, so when they look polished, the rest of your outfit follows.

If you love suede boots but you’re scared to ruin them in the rain, I share tips on how to protect the quality of your suede boots even during the rainy season.
9. Posture Matters
Hot take: It’s not the outfit, it’s how you wear it.
When you’re confident in what you’re wearing, it shows. Standing a little straighter, moving with ease and owning your look genuinely changes how your outfit comes across.
If you apply all the tips and add confidence, I bet you’ll check all the It Girl boxes.
