For the woman who wants to elevate her outfits

11:46 AM, when you realize your ensemble doesn’t look as polished as expected
Have you ever picked out an outfit that looked so good in your mind but once you wore it, it looked unflattering…or just cheap? As someone who’s experienced the same, I break down exactly why your outfits might not be coming together the way you expect, along with how to fix that to elevate your wardrobe.
From my experience, it’s often the small details we overlook that affect how an outfit comes across. So, let’s dive into the mistakes that can make an outfit look cheap and how to fix them for a more refined look, no matter the occasion.
Reasons Why Your Outfits Look Cheap
1. The Clothes Don’t Fit You Properly
At a time when overly baggy or ultra-tight pieces can look aesthetic, sometimes the outfit can off as unintentional. This is because when clothes don’t sit right on your body, they tend to lose their shape and structure, making them unflattering.
There’s also the comfort factor. If an outfit doesn’t fit properly, you might become overly conscious of how you look and keep adjusting it throughout the day. That takes away from the confident, put-together look.
How to Fix That
Go for pieces that skim your body nicely while still allowing movement. You can also apply simple adjustments like tucking, cinching or making alterations to your clothes.

2. Leaving Out Accessories
Accessories make a huge difference in your outfit even in subtle ways. Without them, I find the look can feel plain and miss that sense of personal style and creativity.
They also add versatility to your wardrobe, helping you create different looks with the same pieces. A single accessory can turn a boring outfit to a stylish one; however, wearing too many can overwhelm your look and make it seem cluttered or cheap.
How to Fix That
Build a collection of accessories that reflect your personal style such as jewelry, scarves, hair clips, sunglasses, watches or belts.
Be intentional with your accessories. For instance, if you choose one bold statement piece like a handbag, keep the rest of your accessories minimal rather than letting them compete for attention.

3. Low Fabric Quality
One of the most common reasons an outfit looks cheap is the fabric itself. You might recreate a look you saw on Pinterest but it doesn’t land. It’s probably because of this. Fabrics of lower quality tend to wrinkle easily, lose shape and can look thin or worn out, which affects the overall finish of your outfit.
How to Fix That
Pay attention to fabric when shopping. Look for materials that hold their structure well or have a slightly thicker feel. Even on a budget, choosing pieces that look structured and well-made can really take your outfit to another level.

4. Mismatched Colours
You can have a stylish look made up of individually nice pieces, but if the colours don’t complement each other, the outfit can appear messy rather than fashionable. In my experience, wearing too many bold colours at the same time can feel exhausting to look at.
Also, when you mix warm and cool tones together without intention, it takes away from an otherwise great outfit. Something crucial I learned is that your outfit can look off if the colour palette doesn’t complement your skin undertone.
How to Fix That
Start by understanding which tones complement your undertone, since this makes it easier to build outfits around colours that flatter you.
If you gravitate toward neutrals, choosing either cool tones (like black, crisp white and grey) or warm tones (like cream, beige and brown) naturally creates a cohesive look.
If you enjoy colour (like I do), you don’t have to avoid it. You just need to be intentional with it:
Choose one statement colour and keep the rest of the outfit neutral.
Stick to the same tone family (such as soft pastels or earthy tones).
Balance bold colours with muted shades to avoid overwhelming the outfit.

5. Wearing Worn-Out Shoes
It can be hard to let go of that favourite pair of shoes that you’ve worn to the ground. However, worn -out or scuffed shoes can take away from an otherwise well-put-together outfit.
Shoes naturally draw attention, and when they look visibly worn, poorly fitted, or low in quality. they can make the entire outfit look less polished. From what I’ve seen, this is one of the small details that people don’t always think about, but it makes a noticeable difference in how everything comes together.
How to Fix That
Keep your shoes clean and in good condition, especially if they’re part of your everyday outfits. A simple outfit can look elevated with clean, well-kept shoes.
If a pair is too worn out, it’s better to replace it or rotate it out of your “put-together” outfits.

6. Wrinkled clothes
Skipping ironing or steaming your clothes is a big let-down on an otherwise well-styled outfit. Even with great fabrics, well-coordinated colours and a perfect fit, if the outfit has wrinkles on it, the overall look will be less appealing.
Clothes that appear creased or unkempt can unintentionally give off an impression of carelessness, even if the outfit itself is thoughtfully put together.
The good news is that this is an easy fix and can make a huge difference in how sleek your outfit looks.
How to Fix That
Take a few minutes to steam or iron your clothes before stepping out. This can instantly elevate your look from careless to polished.
If you’re often on the go, choose fabrics that are less prone to wrinkling like wool, or use a hand-held steamer to make this step much easier to maintain.

How Can I Make My Outfit Look Expensive on a Budget
The small details matter when it comes to elevating your overall look. I’ve found that choosing well-fitting pieces, sticking to a cohesive colour palette, and keeping your clothes wrinkle-free can make an outfit look intentional and effortless.
Clean, polished shoes and accessorizing with intention also creates a more refined outfit regardless of the price.

In the end, putting together a polished outfit doesn’t have to be complicated. Once you start paying attention to the small details, you’ll never have to second-guess your look before stepping out.
